Revolution in Motion: Unleashing the 2024 Acura ZDX - Elevate Your Drive

Summary

Acura is the luxury and performance division of Japanese automaker Honda. Based primarily in North America, the brand launched in March 1986, marketing luxury and performance automobiles. Acura sells its care in the US, Canada, Mexico, Panama, and Kuwait. The company has also sold cars in mainland China, Hong Kong, Russia, and Ukraine.

In 2024, Acura is starting a journey into the world of electric cars with the resurrection of a name from its past: ZDX. Compared to the 2010 model that featured a gas engine and fastback styling, the new 2024 ZDX SUV is sporting a more traditional two-box SUV shape.

The 2024 Acura ZDX is the product of a partnership with General Motors. This means it can utilize GM’s Ultium battery.

Pricing

If you get to the end of this review and think you might want to buy one, you can expect to pay from $66,000 up to $75,000 depending on the trim and options you choose.

The top-priced model is the Type S and you can expect it to deliver the zippy acceleration you’d expect from an EV. If the driving range is more of a concern, the single-motor A-Spec trim is the one you should consider.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

The single-motor A-Spec is the entry-level model with a 340 horsepower motor driving the rear wheels. An optional second motor is available for this model. It doesn’t increase overall horsepower, but it does add all-wheel drive.

The more intriguing model in the line-up is the sportier Type S. You get two motors and all-wheel drive as standard. The electric motors are tuned up to deliver a combined 500 horsepower. In addition, the model has an air suspension system with adaptive dampers plus Brembo brakes and 22-inch wheels. All-season tires are standard, but ordering the ZDX Type S with summer tires is possible.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

GM’s Ultium battery technology is what powers the ZDX, using the same 102.0-kWh battery pack as the Lyriq. The driving range in the A-spec trim is up to 325 miles. Choose the Type S instead and that range drops to just 288 miles per charge.

DC fast charging comes as standard and the battery can charge at rates up to 190 kW. Acura has stated that this can add 81 miles of range in just 10 minutes of charging.

Fuel Economy and Real World MPGe

We’re still waiting for the EPA to release estimates for the ZDX’s MPGe, but it's expected they will be similar to the Lyriq’s. That means a rating of up to 95 MPGe for city driving and 82 MPGe for highway driving.

If you want to know more about the ZDX’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Acura has opted for a more conservative design compared to the Precision EV Concept. A yoke-style steering wheel has been replaced with a standard circular one. While the concept featured a transparent infotainment glass unit. The ZDX has a more traditional touchscreen.

Inside the cockpit, there’s room for five riders thanks to the two rows of seating. From the photos we’ve seen, it also looks like there are parts shared with GM cars, such as climate controls and window switches.

Infotainment and Connectivity

At the center of the ZDX’s dashboard is an 11.3-inch infotainment display. In addition, an 11.0-inch gauge-cluster display nestles in the binnacle in front of the steering wheel. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come as standard; however, the interface of the infotainment display is built on Google’s Android Automotive in-vehicle hardware. As such, Google Maps is the default navigation system. A Bang & Olufsen stereo system features 14 speakers, some of which are tastefully hidden behind attractive brushed aluminum grilles.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

There is a good selection of standard driver-assistance features on the ZDX. These include:

  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist

If you choose to upgrade to the AcuraWatch 360+ system, your ZDX will also come with a hands-free driving mode and adaptive cruise control.

If you’d like to see some information about the car’s crash test results, you can find these on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

The ZDX warranty package is easily comparable with the car's rivals such as the Lexus RZ and the Cadillac Lyriq. While the Lyriq and Lexus are only covered for the first maintenance visit, the Acura is covered for everything, up to the first two years or 24,000 miles.

Here are the details:

  • The limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  • The powertrain warranty covers six years of 70,000 miles
  • Complimentary scheduled maintenance is covered for two years or 24,000 miles
