How Long Does It Take To Ship A Car Overseas?

Just like with developing an accurate quote for shipping costs, all kinds of factors can play into the timeline to deliver a vehicle to an overseas location. As a general rule, you should expect 30 to 60 days to ship a vehicle internationally, although shipping times can be shorter across a large gulf or a sea (vs shipping across the Atlantic or Pacific). Remember also that if it’s possible for you to drive the car to the port city it will leave from (rather than having it shipped there), you can see some cost savings.

What Do You Need To Ship A Car Overseas?

Unsurprisingly, there is a lot of paperwork and documentation involved in overseas shipping for cars and trucks.

Please note the following documents that are required from you to transport your vehicle:

Original Title: The vehicle's original title is necessary for export. It must be a clear title with no liens.
Bill of Sale: If the title is not in the customer's name, a bill of sale is required.
Identification: A copy of the customer's passport or an Employer Identification Number (EIN) letter is required if the customer is a U.S. citizen.
Power of Attorney (POA) Form: A POA form must be completed to authorize the handling of the shipping process, giving the ocean freight carrier permission to act on your behalf.
Prepare your vehicle for shipment: curb weight is a big part of shipping costs, and shipping your vehicle with between a quarter-tank and half-tank of fuel helps keep weight down. Please ensure the vehicle is in good running condition, unless we are informed otherwise in advance.
Establish the Value of the Vehicle:Fair Market Value (FMV): This is the value of the vehicle based on its condition, make, model, age, mileage, etc. You can determine this through various ways: Appraisal: Have the vehicle professionally appraised by an authorized expert.

OR

Invoice or Sale Price: If the vehicle was recently purchased, the original invoice or the price you paid for the car could serve as the declared value.

We can use that pricing from the invoice to make certain it’s consistent with appraised value.

If the vehicle is not purchased soon we will need a certified appraisal that matches again with the Valuation tool Valuation tools . Resources like Kelley Blue Book (KBB), Edmunds, or NADA Guides are a good place to get an estimate of the vehicle's value.

Examples of other related fees can include:

2.5% of vehicle value for cars, as import duty
25% of vehicle value for light trucks, as import duty
Harbor Maintenance Fee (HMF), 0.125% of cargo value
Merchandising Processing Fee (MPF), 0.3464% of cargo value (minimum of $31.67, maximum of $614.35

Destination countries might have their own specific charges and taxes, all of which would be rolled into your quote from SGT Auto Transport.
