Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Standard for the new Mustang is an upgraded turbocharged 315-hp 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine with 350 pound-feet of torque. Every EcoBoost Mustang also gets a 10-speed automatic transmission, while the Mustang GT has a six-speed manual as standard.

Under the hood of the all-new Mustang Dark Horse, a track-ready model is a 500-hp Coyote V-8 engine with leaner and meaner equipment upgrades. The 5.0-liter Coyote V-8 engine is currently on its fourth upgrade and is also found in the 2022 Ford F-150 pickup. However, the Mustang has a new steel oil pan and a dual air intake box. The twin throttle-body cold-air intake allows twice the airflow to create the most powerful GT to date.

In terms of steering feel and feedback there have been some obvious improvements and an optional performance exhaust increases output to 486 horsepower and 481 pound-feet.

Performance of the test track delivered 60 mph in 4.2 seconds for the Mustang GT with the EcoBoost not too far behind, hitting 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The Dark Horse didn’t gallop too much quicker achieving 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, 100 mph in 9.7 seconds, and crossing a quarter-mile in 12.5 seconds at 115 mph. It also shone in a 0-to-150-to-0 speed test when it returned to a stop in just 29.7 seconds.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Estimates for the four-cylinder Mustang, according to the EPA, are that it’s good for 22 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. If you choose the optional Performance Package this erodes the fuel economy somewhat, reducing it to 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway.

The Mustang GT with its six-speed manual gets 14 mpg city and 23 mpg on the highway. Opt for the 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse and you can expect to get 14 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.

You’ll find more information about the Mustang’s fuel economy by visiting the EPA’s website

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Ford has said that the interior is a “fighter-jet inspired” design, but it’s far more comfortable than such a label might suggest.

It has a 12.4-inch instrument cluster, which is a massive leap ahead of the previous models. The display is also totally configurable and can be customized with a variety of colors, gauges, and a “calm” screen that reveals only the most necessary details. Ambient lighting and a driver’s display adapt to whichever drive mode you select.

Base models come with cloth seats and micro-suede inserts. Premium level models include stitched bits and pieces from door trim to dashboard. The Mustang GT gets leather inserts.

A fun feature is a Remote Rev function that allows you to blast up the RPMs with a click on the key fob and admire the sound of this pony from outside the car.

Infotainment and Connectivity

A massive upgrade has taken place in terms of the Mustang’s interior gadgetry. There is a 13.2-inch infotainment screen that uses Ford’s Sync 4 software. It flows from the gauge cluster toward the center of the car behind a curved glass panel.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard on the system, plus there’s an optional wireless smartphone charger. This helps you reduce the clutter of charging cables.

Voice commands are possible thanks to Amazon Alexa and Ford Streaming, replacing traditional knob-turning or button pressing.

Every model comes with Ford Power-Up software capability, allowing for over-the-air updates for later software and vehicle function improvements.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The latest models come with more driver-assistance technology than ever before, allowing you to go faster but at the same time feel safer. Every Mustang comes with a Ford CoPilot360.

Key safety features include:

  • Standard adaptive cruise control
  • Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
  • Optional active pothole mitigation (included with Performance Pack)

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

The warranty is solid but average. And, unlike Chevy, there is no complimentary scheduled maintenance visit included.

  • Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers five years of 60,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance
