Unveiling the Future: The Volkswagen ID.7 - Driving Innovation Forward

Summary

The Volkswagen ID.7 is a battery-electric car produced by Volkswagen, since 2023. It’s a five-door liftback design following hot on the heels of the electric ID.4 SUV and ID.Buzz minivan.

It’s a mid-size electric family four-door that’s similar to the now-discontinued Passat. It’s considered to be quite stylish even though it’s been designed to be as aerodynamic as possible.

The first model to launch will be a rear-wheel drive variant, but a dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain will also be offered. As well as the ID.7 saloon, there will also be a new estate version called the Shooting Brake. The car will have a more coupe-esque shape than your traditional boxy estate car.

The ID.7 will be an all-new model for VW and will go on sale in the second half of 2024 as a 2025 model.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

When the ID.7 first launches it will come with a single electric motor driving the rear wheels with 282 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. The AP550 is a permanent synchronous magnet motor that spins to 13,000 rpm. This should be enough to get the ID.7 to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds. Joining the lineup later down the line will be a dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant with more power.

Take the car for a test drive and its taut suspension, well-controlled body motions, and playful handling should leave you feeling impressed. The European spec car features adaptive dampers, but in the US, these will be an option.

Cruising in the ID.7 is a quiet and refined experience which makes it the perfect car for drivers looking for a quiet cabin for relaxing commutes. Ride comfort is good, even when the road is rough.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The standard battery in the ID.7 will be a 77.0-kWh battery pack borrowed from the ID.4. The ID.7’s more aerodynamic shape means the range is slightly increased to around 300 miles of driving per charge.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

The EPA has yet to release fuel-economy estimates for the ID.7 and VW is keeping equally quiet. Expectations are that the numbers will be higher than the ID.4 which is rated for up to 107 MPGe for city driving.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The ID.7 was always going to have a spacious interior because it was replacing the mid-size Passat family sedan in the VW lineup. The generous cargo space features a liftback design similar to the Arteon sedan.

The interior is smart, the build quality top-notch, and a large glass roof that switches from opaque to transparent is also available. It can even be operated using voice commands.

The air vent design caught our attention as it’s rather complicated but at the same time a novel design. The airflow is adjusted using electric motors to better distribute warm or cool air throughout the cabin.

Making a debut in the ID.7 is a new generation of front seats that offer an optional massage function that includes large air cushions in the seat squad that are designed to activate the pelvis and spine. An automatic climate function that uses temperature and moisture sensors in the seats decides whether to blow heated or cooled air through the seat fabric.

Volkswagen has confirmed that the ID.7’s interior will be made using a few recycled materials. This includes fabrics made out of ocean plastics and recycled bottles, as well as recycled plastics in the insulation.

Infotainment and Connectivity

A standard feature of all ID.7 models will be a large 15.0-inch infotainment display featuring VW’s latest infotainment interface. You can control all the major functions, such as climate control through this screen. There are some touch-sensitive sliders underneath to adjust the temperature and stereo volume. VW has listened to its customers and backlit these controls so you can see them at night.

A small digital display is included for the legally required information such as vehicle warning lights and a digital speed readout.  There is no conventional instrument panel. Instead, the head-up display provides the driver with information ranging from vehicle speed and road lane markings to distance and turn arrows for the navigation system.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The features haven’t been confirmed yet, but it’s expected that the ID.7 will come with a host of driver-assistance features as standard. These are likely to include:

  • Automated emergency braking
  • Automatic high-beam headlamps
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
  • Park assist system with a memory function that scans to the side of the vehicle when traveling under 25 mph. It also remembers any spaces in the last 55 yards in which it can be parallel parked alongside the curb.

The parking system also remembers how and where you park the car in your driveway or garage and will automatically take over the maneuvering. You can choose whether to stay in the car or stand outside and watch, as long as you’re no more than 27 yards away.

You’ll find information about the ID.7’s crash-test results on the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

VW’s limited warranty package is above average, however, compared with rival non-luxury brands, the powertrain coverage is below average. It does, however, offer two years or 20,000 miles of complimentary scheduled maintenance. The ID.7’s electric components will be covered for eight years or 100,000 miles.
