What Are The Factors that affect the cost of shipping a car?

Please bear in mind that the costs that are cited in the above table are only generalized estimates of what shipping a vehicle could cost.

icon-1-distance
Distance

Delivery Distance and Speed

Right off the top, this factor is one of the biggest and most obvious that you have to bear in mind when it’s time to ship a vehicle. The more miles that have to be covered to get a vehicle to its destination, the more expensive it’s going to be; conversely, cost-per-mile can actually be a bit less when there’s more distance involved.

icon-2-car
Your Vehicle

The Make, Model, and Size of Your Vehicle

State laws mandate weight restrictions for carriers, and your vehicle shipping job is no exception. Curb weight and size can spike shipping costs, and a 5500-pound Chevrolet Tahoe, then, is obviously going to cost more to ship than a 2800-pound Mini Cooper.

icon-3-route
Route

The Route, the Accessibility of your Pick-up and Delivery Locations

When they’re planning your vehicle’s trip to its destination, carriers are always going to try to look for a route that’s the most direct and efficient. When the Interstate highways and US highways were in the planning phase, they were designed to link cities and to service metro areas. It’s easier for a shipper to access these more common routes and is going to be more cost-effective. On the other hand, if a carrier has to pick up or deliver your vehicle to or from a smaller town or a more remote location (with a lot of miles on two-lane state or county roads), that could have an effect on the final shipping costs.

icon-4-operable
Vehicle Condition

Whether your car is running or not

In our business, it’s not unusual for a customer to need to ship a car that doesn’t run and drive under its own power. That can happen for a number of reasons, such as sending a rare vehicle to a mechanic or garage that has the tools and know-how to do repairs or restoration on it. Regardless of the reason, shipping a vehicle that’s not in running condition will be more difficult for the shipper; it can mean a lot more work to load or unload and might even require special equipment to get the job done. That can all come into account when it’s time to ship your vehicle

icon-5-time
The Time of Year

The Time of Year When Your Car Shipment is Scheduled

Whether a logistics service is handling washing machines, scrap iron or vehicle shipping, seasonal surges in traffic and supply/demand can have an effect on the process and the price. Christmas, Thanksgiving and other holidays mean an uptick in the number of vehicles on the road, and often mean a spike in the need for auto shipping services, which then means an effect on shipping rates.

By definition, weather is unpredictable, but there are certain weather patterns that we have to account for when it’s time to figure shipping costs. Hurricane season along the Gulf Coast or in the Southeast, seasonal flooding in Florida or extreme heat in Southwestern states in the summer puts more stress on shippers’ trucks as well as possible re-routing of the trip, which means higher shipping costs.

Are you familiar with the “snowbird effect?” For many decades, people from places like New York, Michigan or New England have been migrating to warmer states like Florida, Arizona, California, and Texas to get away from the harsh winters in their home states. They then return home from March to about May, and they often want to ship their vehicles as they travel south or then back north again. That means an uptick in demand for vehicle shipping, and that supply/demand effect can drive shipping costs as well.

Type of Service

What Are The available Types Of Car Transport Services and how they affect the cost?

At SGT Auto Transport, we pride ourselves on the flexibility we offer for our customers. When it’s time to figure out a plan for shipping your vehicle, you can choose from a couple of different services for the actual transport itself. There are two options that are most commonly used:

Open auto transport: Simple and affordable, open transport is the most commonly chosen type of transport. An open auto transport rig is like the kind of car haulers that bring new vehicles to dealerships.  Your vehicle is loaded along with a number of other vehicles onto a transport trailer with upper and lower decks. By hauling as many vehicles  as possible (sometimes as many as 11 cars at once), the carrier has a way to optimize their run. The disadvantage of open auto transport is that your vehicle will be exposed to the elements and any grit or debris that can come from the highway. Still, this is the most popular option; it’s cost-effective, secure and safe for your vehicle. Open auto transport is the most common type of car shipping service. It’s easy to arrange, convenient, and excellent value for money. A car shipping company transports your car, together with other vehicles, using open trailer transport.

Enclosed car shipping: This is an especially good choice if you’ve got a vehicle that needs special handling such as a vintage or antique car, high-dollar luxury vehicle, custom/modified or especially scarce car. With enclosed car shipping, your vehicle is loaded into a trailer and locked up for the trip, affording it protection on all four sides from road debris, weather and prying eyes. Enclosed car shipping will also entail a premium cost, as much as 30% to 40% higher than open auto transport. Enclosed auto transport, also sometimes called enclosed vehicle transport or enclosed carrier auto transport, is a way of shipping a vehicle that provides extra protection.

icon-8-fuel
Price of Fuel

The Cost of Fuel at the Time of Your Shipment

The price of gas is on everyone’s minds, and it’s no surprise that fuel costs are going to affect per-mile costs for shipping carriers. These costs have to be picked up by consumers. SGT Auto Transport does make the effort to stay on top of these trends, and things like fuel costs are incorporated into our shipping estimates with the calculator feature on our website.

For hotshot deliveries, time-sensitive shipping and last-minute shipping arrangements, we do offer top-loading, guaranteed pickup and express shipping services. We offer these features to enhance convenience for customers, but they also involve premium shipping costs.

What is the average shipping cost for a car?

Now that you’ve seen a set of rough estimates on shipping prices to specific destinations, let’s talk about a few of the factors that can come into play and have an effect on final costs for shipping at any given time. These are some of the variables that have to be taken into account when we are figuring out cost per mile and final price for shipping.

While the prices and delivery times on the dedicated services page are rough estimates, remember that for more accurate and current pricing, you can always take advantage of our car shipping calculator feature for a more precise quote. Just put in the information that the calculator asks for and within seconds, you can see a quote for the services you need.

Why Choose an Enclosed vehicle Shipping for an Expensive Car?

Think for a moment about a rare Jaguar sedan, a vintage 60s muscle car, a high-end Bentley or an ancient Ford Model A. If you had reservations about wanting to ship a vehicle like that on a transport trailer, exposed to the elements, those concerns are legit and you’d have every reason to feel that way.

Enclosed vehicle shipping would give you the peace of mind of knowing  that Jaguar or Model A is completely protected through the length of the trip. The car would be sealed up, safe and secure, inside a trailer, then locked from the outside so it’s never exposed to weather, road debris and curious onlookers until it makes it to its destination. Yes, enclosed car shipping does cost more money, but when you take those considerations into account, it can definitely be worth the extra expense, knowing  that you have an extra measure of protection and security for a scarce and expensive vehicle.

Why Car Shipping Costs Fluctuate Throughout the Year

We’ve talked briefly about some of the variables that can affect the cost of shipping a vehicle according to the time of year. Let’s expand on those factors a little:

1

Weather and Its Role in Car Shipping Prices

Seasonal changes in weather can have a big impact on both the safety and efficiency of any logistics task that involves driving long distances. It just stands to reason that those impacts are going to be passed on in the form of shipping rates.

2

How Extreme Weather Conditions Increase Costs

Driving a family SUV through severe weather such as hurricane conditions, heavy rains or winter storms can be a nerve-wracking experience, and that challenge is multiplied when it comes to shipping vehicles. It can mean the shipper having to develop a whole different plan to the vehicle’s destination, and in some cases even special equipment to make sure that a vehicle arrives safely and on-time.

3

Winter Shipping and the Risk of Delays

Nobody likes driving in rough winter conditions. Severe winter weather, including ice storms, heavy snow and shorter daylight hours, can mean a road trip that’s downright treacherous. Those rough driving conditions can also mean longer transport time, and those delays can also translate to higher shipping fees.

4

Summer Heat and Its Effect on Transport Prices

Summer months might mean clear skies and safer driving conditions, but they can also come with a spike in shipping costs. Often, car dealers, snowbirds (as referenced above) and vacationers are all looking for auto transport services, which can have an effect on shipping times and prices.

5

Storms and Natural Disasters: Price Adjustments

Severe weather events seem to be getting more and more common. Again and again, severe weather such as flooding, tornadoes, wildfires and blizzards quickly escalates  to full-blown natural disasters. Obviously those are all very disruptive for shipping and logistics; transport companies might have to reroute far away from their original plans, which means more miles, added fuel costs as well as other miscellaneous precautions. Those adjustments are necessarily reflected in shipping rates.

Weather Planning for Long-Distance Shipments

Just like if you were mapping out a vacation or road trip in the family SUV, shippers keep a close eye on weather forecasts and road conditions when planning a route. That kind of forethought and planning helps keep prices down, cuts down on risks to drivers and vehicles, and hopefully helps in assuring on-time deliveries.

Price Changes on Shipping Different Types of Vehicles

In a business like SGT Auto Transport, we know that no two customers are going to have the same needs, and no two shipping jobs are going to be the same. The type of vehicle being shipped plays a big part in determining shipping rates. A bigger and heavier vehicle is going to have a different set of requirements, while certain rare or especially valuable vehicles will need enhanced levels of shipping security and special handling.

Classic Cars

Classic cars are, by definition, “classic” because there just aren’t that many of them around anymore. In the case of a true classic, you can count on us to handle that vehicle with extra caution and care to assure its safety on the trip. This is an instance when we really recommend enclosed car shipping for that added measure of protection on the trip. In addition, shipping companies might offer (or even require) enhanced levels of insurance coverage, reflective of the higher value of a rare vehicle.

Sports Cars

Like classic cars, sports cars present a different set of needs and challenges for shipping. Many are designed with low ground clearance that can make them more difficult to handle and load into a trailer, for instance. These reasons are a good argument for enclosed shipping for these cars, helping to protect them from the elements, providing security against curious onlookers and against vandalism.

Exotic Cars

A supercar-style exotic like a Ferrari, Lamborghini or McLaren, really calls for a different level of care and handling while being shipped. These vehicles represent a big investment, and many owners of these high-end cars request “white glove” service, which means a fully-enclosed and climate-controlled trailer for transport, usually with enhanced insurance to cover their high-dollar value.

Motorcycles

Of course, a motorcycle is a lot smaller and lighter than a car, making it considerably cheaper to ship them than the typical vehicle transport for a full-size car or truck. We do, however, recommend that a motorcycle be packed in a specialized crate for shipment and fully secured, both of which can add to shipping charges.

Heavy Duty Trucks

Heavy-duty trucks and specialty commercial vehicles are much bigger and heavier, which means a different set of considerations for shipping. They’ll require a larger vehicle to haul them, heavy-duty equipment and possibly even a specialized trailer, which can all have an effect on cost-effectiveness.

Electric Cars

While electric cars don’t require fuel, they do tend to weigh considerably more than internal-combustion vehicles, due to the added weight of their battery pack. That, along with the special handling sometimes required to avoid damage to the battery, can mean an increase in the rates for shipping these vehicles.

How Distance Affects Your Car Shipping Costs

Long-Distance Shipping vs. Short-Distance Transport

Longer runs mean more road time, more wages paid to the driver, more fuel costs, more wear and tear on the transport vehicle and will result in higher shipping costs. The other side of that is the “volume discount” that means cost-per-mile rates are lower, due to the number of miles that have to be covered.

Regional Differences in Shipping Rates

If you were to track the patterns of auto shipping runs at SGT Auto Transport, one thing would quickly be apparent: coastal areas like Florida, California or the Gulf Coast have a higher demand for auto shipping services. The coastal regions are home to port areas and major urban hubs, which can drive up shipping costs due to the heightened demand and competition. They’re simply popular hotspots for vehicle imports and exports.

On the other hand, rural states and landlocked states like Oklahoma, the Dakotas or Kansas are often more sparsely populated and have lower demand for vehicle shipping. That can often mean fewer carriers who are available to get the job done, longer wait times and limited route availability. All those factors can affect cost, as well as the charges involved when a carrier has to leave well-traveled routes like the Interstates and make it to areas that are farther off the beaten track.

Shipping a vehicle in the Midwest can mean a lot of road time, but shipping a vehicle to or from a major city like Chicago, St Louis or Indianapolis can be surprisingly affordable thanks to the number of carriers that are competing for some of those routes. A run to a small town that’s farther from a big city can get more expensive, though, especially if a shipper has to cover a bunch of state roads to get there. Along the same lines, shipping in the Northeast (NYC, Boston, New England) can get a little more pricey due to toll roads, traffic congestion and contending with urban driving.

This gives you a brief overview of some of the regional factors that have to be considered for shipping a vehicle; understanding these variables can be a real help when it’s time to start planning your car shipment, including the calendar dates and possible routes.

Impact of Route Availability on Shipping Costs

Major highways and Interstates are the most direct way to get to or from a city or region, and vehicle shipping that can follow these routes will tend to be priced a bit more favorably. On the other hand, reaching a remote or rural area that’s harder to get to can mean a higher shipping charge.

Fuel Consumption and Distance-Based Pricing

More miles means more fuel that’s burned up, so longer distances mean more fuel costs that are passed on to customers. Fluctuations in gas prices also have a direct effect on how much it costs to ship a vehicle.

How Cross-Country Routes Compare in Cost

Shipping a vehicle from coast to coast or over a couple of thousand miles is going to cost more money, obviously – but if the shipping agent can stick to more direct and well-traveled routes, rates might be more competitive and expense might be mitigated somewhat. That’s one of the beauties of the American Interstate Highway system; it was designed for the most direct paths from one major city or region to another, with minimal slowdowns through smaller towns.

How Distance Affects Your Car Shipping Costs

It’s axiomatic that the more miles the carrier has to cover to get your car to its destination, the more expensive things are going to be. More miles means more time on the road, more fuel, more variables when it comes to the availability of shipping routes.

Understanding the Rise in Car Shipping Costs for 2025

Going into 2025, there are a lot of uncertainties on the horizon, many of which can have an effect on car shipping costs (and many of which are beyond anyone’s control):

Inflation’s Impact on Shipping Prices

As we all know, everything is affected by inflation. Labor, materials, the price of things like fuel, motor oil and tires have all seen an uptick, and a shipping agent has to be able to cover these costs by passing them on to consumers in the form of higher shipping charges.

Changes in Fuel Prices

The price of oil is affected by factors around the world; drive by any gas station and you’ll see prices change (up or down) weekly, or even daily. Fuel is, of course, one of the biggest drivers of shipping costs since it’s one of the major sources of overhead for any shipping company, and that will be reflected (up or down) in shipping rates for consumers.

Increased Regulatory Compliance Costs

States and the Department of Transportation have regulatory requirements for vehicle safety, emissions, driver safety and other parts of the shipping equation. Compliance with this regulatory framework can cost more money for transport companies, which means a spike in auto transport costs.

Car Shipping Costs by Distance/Mileage

These cost-per-mile prices are reflective of market conditions and are a ballpark estimate. Once favors like fuel prices, location of pickup and delivery and time of the year are plugged into the equation, that can all change.

For a more precise estimate on shipping costs, we invite you to get an instant quote for auto transport today!

Labor Shortages

Around the US, there’s been a persistent shortage of professional drivers in the trucking industry. That scarcity has led to premium pay to attract drivers, and those increased labor costs can mean higher shipping rates and, occasionally, delays in scheduling with longer delivery times. Rest assured, though, that SGT Auto Transport’s drivers are always going to be the best and most professional we can find; every one of them has to clear an exhaustive screening process before we will contract with them.

Global Supply Chain Disruptions

Even as the worst of the Covid pandemic recedes into history, supply chain problems and bottlenecks still occur and can disrupt shipping schedules. The worst part about these supply chain bottlenecks is their unpredictability; in any given week or month, availability of things like parts and equipment for transport vehicles (for instance) can cause a spike in shipping costs.

Will Auto Transport Prices Change in 2025 - 2026 ?

Bearing all the above factors in mind, it’s a safe bet that auto transport prices will remain volatile going into 2025 and ‘26. Inflation, fuel prices and supply chain issues can all come into play, and advances in technology for logistics and transportation can also drive spikes (or drops) in prices.

Are there any State Laws and Regulations Affecting Car Shipping?

When it comes to transportation of vehicles, shippers have to deal with a maze of state laws and regulations; navigating these different laws and regulations all have an effect on prices. That can include weight restrictions, special permits for interstate transport, environmental laws and a whole list of other influences.

Emissions Standards

  • For decades, California has had some of the most stringent vehicle emissions laws in place, out of any state in the union. California’s emissions standards are managed by CARB (California Air Resources Board); to operate within the state, shipping companies have to prove their vehicles are CARB-compliant. That regulatory compliance cost can affect shipments of vehicles to or from California.
  • Northeastern states such as New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts all have emissions standards that are similar to those mandated by CARB. Like in California, shipping to or from these states means the same kind of compliance for shippers’ vehicles, and potentially higher prices for customers.

Weight Limits

Weight limits for commercial vehicles vary state by state, but here are a couple of notable ones:

  • Texas imposes upper limits on weight for commercial vehicles, including transport trucks. Waivers are available for vehicles that exceed those limits, but at an extra cost. That can be a concern for hauling SUVs or oversize trucks that may be subject to extra fees when they enter the state.
  • Like Texas, Florida’s Department of Transportation puts a hard limit on weight for commercial trucks on public roads. Heavier loads can mean special permits, extra costs, and fines if a truck exceeds those limits without the proper documentation and permitting.

Oversized Load Permits

  • Any commercial truck hauling an oversize load in the State of New York requires a special permit, which can possibly be a consideration for a vehicle transport truck that’s hauling multiple cars or larger vehicles. Like with weight restrictions, oversize load permits mean added cost to ship out of, to, or through New York State.
  • Georgia also mandates special permits for oversize loads. In addition, the state requires that the shipping agent plan the route in advance to skirt any areas with low clearances or size or weight restrictions on their roads. That can run up costs as well as delay shipping schedules.

Electric Vehicle Transport

  • Colorado has been a real innovator in encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), but the state also has a special set of safety standards and regulations for companies that are transporting EVs. Colorado requires commercial shippers to have specialized equipment for hauling EVs, as well as specific training for drivers; both factors can have an effect on shipping costs.
  • Many of Colorado’s regulations about shipping EVs are also in place in Washington State, including specific charging considerations during the trip. That can all play into shipping costs as well.

Insurance and Liability Regulations

  • It’s imperative that any vehicle have comprehensive insurance coverage while it’s being shipped, and California sets the bar higher than most states for this coverage. California’s mandate for transport companies requires insurance coverage that’s actually above the minimum federal requirement, leading to an uptick in shipping costs.
  • Florida, like California, requires enhanced insurance coverage for auto transport carriers, assuring the proper level of protection for vehicles that are in transit. Those costs are often passed on to consumers, affecting the price of transporting a car from, to, or through the state.

How to Get a Quote for Auto Transport Services

A call agent talking on the phone

So you’ve looked at your options, you’ve thought about your timeframe and you’d like to discuss a plan for shipping your car. Like any other major expense, you should carefully consider your options for transporting a vehicle.

Here are some steps you can take to get the best idea of cost, and the most favorable rates you can find:

Research Auto Transport Companies

Just like you’d do for any other service, we’d recommend taking a good look at a few transport companies. Look at their customer ratings, Better Business Bureau accreditation, transport review sites or forums, and any feedback that might be on their website.

Provide Accurate Information

Now that you have a good understanding of some of the variables that can affect pricing for auto transport, always be sure to give a customer representative the most clear information you can about calendar dates, your vehicle itself, and your pickup and dropoff locations. The more information we have, the better we’ll be able to deliver an accurate quote for you.

Understand Pricing Options

Remember that pricing options can vary; many companies offer discounted cash pricing along with regular pricing, and of course hotshot or last-minute delivery pricing can come at a premium.

Review the Quote Carefully

Once you have the quote, be sure to give it careful scrutiny. Read the fine print and all the bullet points for accuracy, including total cost, calendar dates and delivery timeframe, and type of service. Remember that SGT Auto Transport’s quotes will never include any surprise charges or hidden fees.

Ask About Discounts

Shipping companies (like SGT Transport) offer specials and discount pricing, including military family pricing, student deals, multiple-car deals and other options. Don’t forget to look into those, as well as exploring our site for any other specials!

Confirm the Quote’s Validity

Price quotes generally have a specific window of time for which they’re considered valid. Make sure that you know how long that period of validity is so that you can lock it in and avoid any price change if you go past that period.

Tips on How to Reduce Auto Transport Costs

To reiterate, here are a few steps you can take to carve a little off the total shipping cost for your vehicle:

icon-tips-1-book-early

Book Early

The more lead time the shipping company has, the better your chances are of finding a favorable deal. Try to schedule your shipping dates at least a couple of weeks in advance.

icon-tips-2-open-car

Choose Open Car Shipping

While enclosed car shipping has advantages and is advisable for valuable or rare vehicles, it also means added cost. Open car shipping, even though it exposes your car to the elements, means a significant break in price.

icon-tips-3-discounts

Take Advantage of Discounts

Seasonal discounts for snowbirds, military discounts, multiple-car discounts and other specials may be in effect. Be sure to check the site for them and ask your customer rep if any are available.

icon-tips-4-dates

Be Flexible with Dates

The more open you can be about scheduling, the more options and specials might be available for you.

icon-tips-5-multiple-cars

Consider Multiple Car Shipping

If you need to ship more than one vehicle, you can see a significant break in cost to ship them together rather than individually.

icon-tips-6-off-peak

Plan for Off-peak Seasons

Remember that holidays, certain summer months and other periods can mean peak shipping traffic and higher shipping rates. Try to plan your timeframe for a different period if possible.

Conclusion: Is Auto Transport Worth the Cost?

For many of us, a car is more than just an investment; we tend to have an emotional attachment to our vehicles, and we have some expectations on how they should be handled and maintained. There are a number of pretty solid reasons why auto transport makes good sense when it comes time to move your vehicle to another destination:

1

Safety

Less time on the road means less of a safety risk for you and your vehicle both

2

Customization

SGT Auto Transport will go to great lengths to ensure that our services are the best fit for you, your needs and your vehicle

3

Mileage

Transport means less time on the road and fewer miles piled up on the odometer (a big consideration for an older vehicle that needs to be preserved or may not be reliable on a long trip)

4

Time Savings

Your time is valuable, and shipping a car cuts down on time invested as well as overall headaches

5

Affordability

Especially for a valuable vehicle, auto shipping can be a surprisingly affordable service

6

Convenience

Let us do the driving and haul your vehicle for you; we can take it almost anywhere you can think of, which means more peace of mind for you

7

Reduced Stress

Especially for someone considering a cross-country move, vehicle shipping means one more loose end that’s tied up and one less potential headache to plan around and stress over
