What is an MC number used for?

An MC number is a 6-digit number assigned by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to both auto transport carriers and brokers.

This MC number gives them the authority to cross state lines with vehicles. Companies that transport vehicles across state lines are required to have interstate operating authority (MC number), in addition to a DOT number.

What is the FMCSA?

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is an agency of the US Department of Transportation. It was established in 2000 with the primary objective of enhancing the safety performance of commercial vehicles including large trucks and buses and reducing accidents across the US trucking industry.

The FMCSA achieves its objective by developing and enforcing regulations, conducting research, providing education and training, and partnering with stakeholders to improve safety on the nation’s highways.

What is the difference between a DOT number and an MC number?

A USDOT number, also known as a US Department of Transportation (DOT) number, is a unique identifier assigned to commercial motor carriers by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FSCSA) operating authority. All commercial motor vehicles that transport goods or passengers and weigh over a certain limit are required to have this identifier.

This number is critical for ensuring the safety of the public on the roadways and compliance with federal regulations. An auto transport company must have this number, regardless of whether they operate within a single state or travel across state lines.

An MC number is assigned to commercial motor vehicles that transport interstate cargo inside their state and cross over state lines.

It is important to note that not all commercial motor carriers require an MC number. For instance, if they only transport goods within their state, they may only need to obtain a USDOT number.

How to check if an auto transport company is reputable

  • Research the company: Look up the company’s website and social media pages to see if they have a professional online presence. Check if they have a physical address and phone number listed on their website.
  • Read reviews: Check out the company’s reviews on websites like Yelp, Google, and the Better Business Bureau. Look for patterns in the reviews, such as repeated complaints about late delivery or hidden fees.
  • Get multiple quotes: Get quotes from multiple companies to compare prices and services. Be wary of companies that offer prices that are significantly lower than their competitors.
  • Ask questions: Contact the company and ask questions about their services, pricing, and insurance policies. A reputable company should be able to provide clear answers to your questions.
