Honoring Our Veterans on November 11

Honoring Our Veterans on November 11

Veterans Day was known as Armistice Day until 1954; it was put in place to commemorate the cessation of hostilities that ended World War One, when the formal armistice was signed at 11 AM on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. World War One was the most destructive war in human history up until that time, and after World War Two Armistice Day was designated as a holiday that would honor all war veterans, living or dead.

The Origins of Veterans Day

Today, Veterans Day is a Federal holiday in the United States, with about 25% of employers offering a day off on that day. If the 11th falls on a Saturday, Veterans Day is observed on Friday, and if it falls on a Sunday, Monday is the day of observance. For years, the tradition also called for two minutes of silence at 2:11 PM Eastern time. The day coincides with the founding of the United States Marine Corps on November 10, 1775, and by tradition the Marines offer a 96 hour leave during that period.

How Veterans Day Impacts Travel and Car Shipping

Unlike some other holidays, the impact of Veterans Day on car shipping or travel is usually pretty minimal. The fact that administrative offices (DMV, Motor Carrier permit offices, etc) could have an effect if there are titles, registrations or permits for oversize/overweight vehicles involved. There could be some logistical hiccups that come with Veterans Day and aut

Why Auto Transport Services Matter for Military Families

For military members, relocating on a fairly regular basis is just a fact of life. You’re going to go where the government needs you to go next, and if you’re married with a family, that means all of you are going to be going there. Even if you’re just moving to a different apartment across town, relocation always means a seemingly endless number of loose ends to tie

Tips for Stress-Free Vehicle Shipping During the Holiday

To help ensure a friction-free shipping experience, here are some useful tips:

It’s standard practice to ship vehicles with ¼ tank of fuel or less, cutting on curb weight and helping to save on shipping costs.

Please remove any detachable external accessories like light bars, cargo boxes, roof racks or antennas, and please check for any loose exterior trim pieces.

Please remove any toll tags or parking tags and disable the car alarm.

Be sure all four tires are fully inflated, the battery is fully charged and all headlights and taillights work.

Check your vehicle for fluid leaks: motor oil, coolant, brake, transmission or power steering fluid. Transport drivers might refuse to load a vehicle with fluid leaks.

Remember that many cities and suburbs have ordinances that prohibit commercial trucks on congested residential streets. If your street has lots of parked cars, 90 degree corners, low hanging branches and power lines, it could be difficult or against the law to get an 80’ commercial transport truck to your location. If so, consider meeting your transport driver at an easier and more accessible spot such as a nearby parking lot.

Before and after transport, you and the driver will each separately perform an inspection of the vehicle for the Bill of Lading document. It’s advised that you take photos of the car from different angles, and give it a good wash job - if there are any dings, scrapes or defects, it’s easier to spot them on a clean car.

Remembering the Sacrifice Traveling Safely This Veterans Day

Too often, the struggle and sacrifice of men and women in uniform is forgotten and taken for granted, in the comfort of the civilian world. These soldiers serve and then come back home to start lives, families and careers, and move on with their lives, but the reality of their service doesn’t go away just because their lives entered a new phase. Veterans Day is a way to not only mark the end of World War One, but to honor and recognize all who served in every war, including the ones who never made it home again.

As we mark Veterans Day, we want you to remember and reflect on the reasons why this holiday exists, and we want you to, as always, stay safe and drive with care if you’re out on the road traveling. And of course, if you have a vehicle that needs to be transported to another state or if you’re in the middle of relocating around Veteran’s Day, contact us here at SGT Auto Transport and let’s see what we can do to help you come up with the perfect auto shipping solution.
