Almost every long-distance load uses I-75, which runs north and south through eastern Sarasota County. The route a carrier takes after that depends on where the car is headed.

Northeast: I-75 north to I-4, then east to I-95 at Daytona Beach. Some carriers stay on I-75 and cut over on I-10 or I-16.
Midwest: I-75 north through Atlanta toward Ohio and Michigan.

Expect two delay points on the local stretch. FDOT is rebuilding the I-75 interchange at Fruitville Road into a diverging diamond, a design that briefly moves traffic to the left side of the road to speed up turns. Work began in early 2025 and is expected to finish in early 2029. Season traffic on I-75 through Sarasota and Manatee counties also peaks from January to April, when visitors, spring training crowds and part-year residents share the road.

For in-state trips from Tampa, Orlando or Miami, driving is usually the sensible choice for one car and one driver. For long snowbird routes from the Northeast or the Midwest, shipping usually wins.

A drive from New York or Chicago takes two or three days. Once you add fuel, hotel nights, meals, wear on the car and a flight back north, the savings from driving shrink fast.

Florida asks new residents to get Florida insurance and title and register their car within 10 days of establishing residency, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). Your Florida driver's license is due within 30 days. Start with insurance.
