Deadline. The Georgia Department of Revenue requires vehicles to be registered within 30 days of moving to Georgia.

Driver's license first. You must hold a valid Georgia driver's license or ID before you can register, and the Georgia Department of Driver Services issues both. Apply within 30 days of moving.

Emissions test. Vehicles registered in the 13 metro Atlanta counties need an emissions test before registration: Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding and Rockdale. For 2026 registrations, 2024 and newer and 2001 and older model years are exempt. Georgia's Clean Air Force runs the program, and a passing test is valid for 12 months. Georgia has no safety inspection.

Order of steps. Buy Georgia insurance, get your Georgia driver's license, pass the emissions test if your county requires one, then visit the County Tag Office. Doing them in this order avoids a second trip.

Title and registration. Apply at your County Tag Office, part of the Department of Revenue's Motor Vehicle Division, with Form MV-1, your out-of-state title or lienholder details, and Georgia insurance. Your insurer must send proof of coverage to the state database, with at least $25,000/$50,000 bodily injury and $25,000 property damage.

TAVT. Georgia replaced sales tax on vehicles with the Title Ad Valorem Tax. New residents pay a one-time 3% of the state's fair market value, compared with 7% on purchases. On a car valued at $25,000, that is $750, due when you title the car.

Military. Active duty service members who are not Georgia residents do not have to register in Georgia, and those who do can claim a TAVT exemption with Form PT-472NS.

The carrier's cargo insurance is the primary cover: $100,000 to $150,000 per load on open trailers and $250,000 to $3,000,000 on enclosed trailers. The limit covers all the cars on the truck together, not each car separately, and the carrier pays its own deductible. It covers damage during transport, not personal items or damage already on the car. The Bill of Lading records the car's condition at pickup and delivery, so inspect the car with the driver at both ends and note any new damage before you sign. Photograph every side at pickup, because those photos support any claim.
